Nigel Heriot

Lived in Great Totham near Maldon.

Like Rayner, he was an RNVR Officer on ASW Trawlers during the war, serving on HMS Basset during 1942. There are two entries for him in the London Gazette. The one for 24th February 1942 says:

"For resource and devotion to duty in saving life:

"Mention in Dispatches.

"Temporary Lieutenant Nigel Stuart Heriot,

D.S.C., R.N.V.R., H.M.S. Basset."

He made his money as a timber merchant, rumored to have stocks in the Lofoten Islands and to have taken Robinetta there. Those who knew him said that he was a true eccentric, walking around his small holding in bare feet and picking thorns out of his feet with a record needle. He would ride a scooter to the railway station barefooted, only putting on his shoes when he boarded the London train.

Heriot kept Robinetta in Burnham-on-Crouch. She wintered in a shed just east of the Royal Burnham. He had another boat as well as Robinetta and was well thought of by the yard. His wife was also a sailor, known for racing Sharpies at one of the Burnham yacht clubs.

Robinetta was sold as part of the household effects after both Mr and Mrs Herriot died.
